Generally speaking, a 5T is made for young children. They are wider and shorter than a size 7,8, 9, etc which are more slender and longer.
Doubtfully it will fit the adult.
I bought the boy's large coat for my 10-year-old and it fits fine. It actually seems a bit small for a 14/16.
I suggest that you go by the weight and height of the child to determine what size to order. I had to get a 3t I initially bought a 2t to replace a 24 mo one we had at home but they seemed to be the exact same size when it arrived so returned for the bigger one.
This jacket is true to size. It depends on the size of the child. For a 2-year-old, I ordered a 3T and for a 3-year old, I ordered a 4T.
